“Build what you want, not what society wants you to build.” ~ Zach

A Love for Cars Passed Down Through Generations

For Zachary Domingo, a 23-year-old part-time mechanic and full-time employee at Tesla’s Gigafactory 1, cars are more than just machines—they’re a connection to family, heritage, and passion. Living in South Lake Tahoe, Zachary has immersed himself in the world of JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) cars, and his love for modifying cars stems from a deep bond he shares with his father.

Zach's automotive journey began at a young age. "When I was little, my father would take me to Hot August Nights out in Reno every year," he recalls. "I was about 5-7 years old, and I would always see these big-block, big-body American cars." It wasn’t until later, at home, watching his father work on a 1992 Acura Integra that Zachary’s curiosity for cars shifted into an active passion. By the age of 16, Zachary was handed the keys to his father’s 1991 Acura Integra, a gift that would ignite his automotive obsession.

From Dream to Reality: Building the 1987 Toyota Corolla

Zachary’s journey with his 1987 Toyota Corolla began with inspiration from the iconic anime "Initial D", where the main character handles a similar car with skill and precision. "This car was like a dream car I could’ve never imagined building," says Zachary. "Once I got it, it didn’t feel real until I woke up the next day, and it was sitting in the garage."

When Zachary first acquired the Corolla, it was in its stock form—nothing extraordinary. "The stock 87 horsepower just wasn’t cutting it," he admits. Determined to transform the car into something special, Zachary decided on a K24 swap, a choice that tested his patience and skills. The swap wasn’t common and presented a series of challenges, but with the help of his father, Zachary was able to push through. Together, they fabricated custom brackets and mounts, learning new techniques along the way.

The Driving Experience and the Build Process

Driving the modified Corolla gives Zachary an adrenaline rush every time he steps on the gas. “It’s like an adrenaline shot,” he says with a smile. And when he parks, a wave of joy and pride washes over him, filled with memories of the hours spent working on the car with his father.

One of the greatest joys of building and showcasing this car comes from the attention it draws at car shows. "When people ask about the car at shows, it just makes me feel like the car is more special than I think it is," Zachary explains. The K24 swap and OEM+ interior truly set his build apart from others in the community.

Advice for Future Enthusiasts and Buyers

For those considering purchasing a classic JDM car like the 1987 Toyota Corolla, Zachary has valuable advice. "If you decide to buy one, whether by importing it or finding one in the States, make sure to check the history of the car," he suggests. Look out for signs of rust, especially in the trunk, and ensure the interior is intact with no cracked dash. Additionally, be wary of any cheap, poorly installed parts that previous owners might have added.

One unique aspect of Zachary’s build is his attention to maintaining a clean OEM+ interior while performing a significant engine swap. The balance of modern power with a classic, clean interior gives the Corolla a special place in the JDM scene.

A Family Affair: Who Helped with the Build?

The heart of Zachary's build lies in the relationship with his father. "When it came down to who helped build the car, it was all done by my father and me," he proudly shares. His father played an instrumental role, not only in sourcing parts but also in installing many of them. Together, they transformed the car from its stock form into the adrenaline-pumping machine it is today.

Zachary also credits Gilson from Bad Habitz Kustoms (@badhabitz_kustoms) for helping to source crucial parts for the build. "He helped find some of the most important parts for the car," Zachary says, grateful for the support he received along the way.

What’s Next? Future Plans for the Build

Though the Corolla is already an impressive machine, Zachary has more plans in store. His future upgrades include a fresh paint job and the addition of a limited-slip differential (LSD) to improve performance. But Zachary’s aspirations don’t end with the Corolla—his ultimate dream car is a 1991 Acura NSX, a vehicle that holds a special place in his heart.

Shoutouts to the Community

The car scene has provided Zachary with more than just a passion for building cars—it’s introduced him to new friends and experiences that have shaped his journey. Two groups, in particular, have had a significant impact on his life: HHWHH and Bad Habitz Kustoms. "Every time I met them, they were so humble and welcoming," Zachary shares. His appreciation for these groups is evident, as they’ve played a crucial role in helping him navigate the car scene.

Building Memories That Last a Lifetime

For Zachary, the JDM community is more than just a hobby—it's a lifestyle and a way to connect with others who share the same love for cars. The 1987 Toyota Corolla stands as a symbol of the hard work, dedication, and countless hours spent in the garage with his father, building something that not only turns heads but also holds sentimental value.

"Build what you want, not what society wants you to build." This quote from Zachary encapsulates the essence of his journey. He didn’t follow trends or build a car to impress others. He built a car that represents his love for JDM culture, his bond with his father, and his desire to stand out with something truly unique.
