Byron Miron - 1987 Toyota Corolla

I might be one of the few that didn't get into AE86s because of Initial D. I just always had been attracted to the AE86. Something about the pop-up headlights and subtle body lines, RWD, manual, hatchback, coupe option and it was a Toyota? Love from the beginning.

Sup! My name is Byron Miron. A 28-year-old living in the Los Angeles area. I co-own MB Auto Center in Castaic with my pops. Working on cars IS life. The little spare time I have I spend with my wife and our dog-child Penny. The only hobby I really have is work, I am really blessed to have worked for days and sometimes months. There is always something to do and someone that needs help and that is why I love what I do.

We all played with cars at some point in our childhood, but for me, it was about taking things apart and seeing how they work and function. Putting it all back together and seeing if I did it right was just part of the deal. Growing up in Sun Valley California the car scene is all over the place, just riding your bike around you will see something cool in everyone's driveway or tucked around the side of houses.

My father had 2 jobs for most of my childhood, so I never saw him much but when I did see him, he had friend's cars he was working on, and I was always somehow getting yelled at for holding the flashlight wrong. Or could never find the 10mm in his toolbox. Now I'm the one doing the yelling. Funny how life works. I never went to car shows growing up, just would be amazed at all the cars driving around. Breaking my neck to see what is making that exhaust tone. Of course, in 2001, Fast and Furious changed my life like most of you reading this.

As an Automotive Technician, Mechanic, diagnosing wizard, Mr Howdidyougetittostart, Toyota has always been the King of the road. Toyota has just always made reliable and long-running vehicles. All my life my dad and most of my extended family had Toyotas. In Guatemala where my parents are from, everyone and anyone has a Toyota. Manual and diesel models that we don't get here in the states.

I might be one of the few that didn't get into AE86s because of Initial D. I just always had been attracted to the AE86. Something about the pop-up headlights and subtle body lines, RWD, manual, hatchback, coupe option and it was a Toyota? Love from the beginning.

So aside from Toyota, another fan favourite the Nissan 240sx. Specifically for me a Red 240sx Type X, just hit every good part of the brain for me. So beautiful. The AE86 coupe is the not as popular twin brother of the Hatchback version. But for me, the Coupe is all I wanted. I love the OEM+ look going on nowadays and for me I wanted something with that in mind just like the Type X, I wanted to recreate the AE86 Coupe with my own styles in mind. Just like new cars nowadays when they offer carbon-fibre trim, aero options, different taillight options and optional cool factory paint colours. I guess I was just building my own car on the Toyota website but in real life.

Growing up I saw a certain Gold Hatchback AE86 and was in awe of the RUNFREE body kit on that car. It told me that was the kit I would do one day but on a coupe. Fast forward to maybe 2020 peak COVID, Allen Lugue shows up to my shop with his friend trying to get tires installed and sees my 86 on the lift. He asks me who's is this as he's admiring all the work done to the suspension. I was just surprised a customer knew what it was he was looking at. He told me he has one too and shows me his IG... I was a star-struck man. I told him I had been following him for YEARS! Great friends to this day.

Man, owning this AE86 is just great. The people you meet along the way are great people. All ages and all beautiful people. I've met some good homies through this car, some of the nicest people who truly care about you and your car. Now driving the car is the best part, so nimble and so responsive. It feels like you are driving a Go-Kart on the street, people always ask what is that thing? So nice to say it's a Corolla!

I built this car as I have other cars in my life with a passion for the build process. My passion has always been in the teardown and building process. Just like when I was a kid, tearing it apart and building it back better. I usually just sell or trade the car after I am done modifying them but this one has stayed for a reason. I genuinely just love this car.

What makes mine unique to me is the way I went about building mine. I did everything myself beside the paint and bodywork. Rebuilt the engine, changed all the suspension components, changed almost every bolt I could change. Upgraded most of the interior and most importantly deleted the radio. ONLY 4AGE NOISES. Sometimes I do take a small speaker with me though for the long drives. So maybe I'll address that in the future with a hidden radio somewhere. The only thing that makes mine truly stand out from other AE86s is my taillights are LED and the turn signals are sequential. Something modern yet subtle. Thanks to @illumaesthetic!

Future Plans

Maybe ITBS one day, still not sure. Maybe I will build another engine for that. Time will tell. I do want another coupe so I can go to the track with my friend Charlie. A way cheaper build for sure. Hopefully.

Advice

Save money, read forums, save money, do more research and save money. Building these cars is only getting more expensive and the cars themselves are getting harder to get. You find a deal, take it and plan your setup and once you think you have enough money, save some more.

Shout Outs

Shout out to the group @AE86_RATCHET_CLUB!

The car scene has brought me, New friends, for sure, being a workaholic and being married leaves very little time for friends. Glad I have a wife that understands my passion and what comes with it. The car scene will forever evolve but it is always nice to see what people can do with some imagination. The urge to modify will always live.

Dream car

My dream car has changed through the years from GTR's, Lexus LFA to now being a Mclaren Senna. Just google the Senna, so amazing.
