Hi, I’m Frankie Edu, 22 years old, From Lathrop CA, I currently work at Southwest Airlines as ground operations in San Jose, CA. Right now for hobbies, I work on my car on my days off or I go out and take pictures on my camera or Polaroid.

As a car enthusiast everyone will say fast and furious franchise and to be honest that’s what did it for me. As a kid growing up we had a need for speed on the PlayStation 2, Grand Turismo, etc. Being able to play those games at the time we’re fun not knowing it would spark that interest in owning/ building the car that I drive today. Fast forwarding to when the first Fast and Furious came out that was the movie to see.

Seeing Paul Walker, and Vin Diesel, better known in the movie as Brian and Dom, both of these cars are what drew my attention, wanting to drive, learning how to drive stick, and owning their car in the movie so I can look and feel cool just as they were in the movie. As I got older and the Fast and Furious movie's car selection we’re getting better, seeing the GTR R34 in 2 Fast 2 Furious made me want that car and even to this day I want to own one because of that movie. As soon I was able to fix a car I was going to do it.

At first, I didn’t see myself in a 2016 Subaru WRX, I was looking for a 2012 WRX Wagon but I couldn’t find one with decently low mileage at a good price. I started my job at Southwest Airlines and need a car to commute from Lathrop, CA. Since my 1990 Lexus LS 400 was starting to break down on me I finally made the decision to get a newer car. Seeing the Subaru in half moon bay, at a ford dealership, yes a ford dealership, they had it up for a good price and low mileage which had me attracted to it and couldn’t pass it up. It started as liking the car, to it being one of my dream cars that I drive.

At first, I didn’t want to modify the car since it was my daily work. After going to some car shows/ meets and seeing similar models of the car fixed up for me itching to do it to mine. Sadly it took a while since money was a big factor in building the car. Soon after making some money the idea for the car went fast, but at the same time too much clouded my mind with what way I should tackle the build. I decided to build this car since I own it, plus I knew I can do something different that no one does. The idea for the car came from the license plate at first, “Mesubae” growing up as a kid Spam and rice in the morning in a Filipino household is a must.

Eventually, I was able to get some spam funko pops, spam plushies, anything Spam related I was looking for, and even served spam musubi at some shows I go to. The goal for the car now has surpassed my original goal with the car.

Owning this car is like being in a new family you never knew. The Subaru community has so many different and unique builds is what I like and it shows how different everyone is. Your car really represents you at the end of the day and this is why I personally love owning my Subie. Being at car shows or even car meets, I get to interact with new people, and people who own the same car. The questions they ask on why this? Or why the spam theme? I tell them I love spam, it’s in my Filipino blood! Driving the car and seeing other Subarus on the road you always have to do the Subie peace sign, everyone knows the peace sign.

What do you think?

For most of the work I can say yes, there are things that I’m not mechanically inclined. Being around other car people I learned how to do it myself. Growing up learning from my cousin Jhun while he fixed cars, even if it’s the little thing like why it has to be that way. He would explain and then let me do it so I can learn.

YouTube is another good source to learn, and I can say I got my skills to be able to work on my car. As I got older and owned my car my car group help me a lot too, from helping me take off my j-pipe when I stripped a bolt they help me get it out, to even a more difficult thing for me was wrapping my car. Got to give a shout-out to the whole StayHumble team for helping me along the way.

Future Plans

A different set of wheels and possibly more carbon pieces.

As of right now, I’m not planning to sell the car since it’s the first car that I got to really modify and make my own. Future plans as of now I really don’t know, until I get the spark again to change the car, it will probably stay like it is for now…

Advice/Tips

My advice would be to get into a car you like. Everyone will tell you this car will be good for you or this should be the one you get since you are new to driving. At the end of the day, your car is your car, everyone in the car scene has a story with the car and that’s what makes each and every car at shows or meets unique. You gotta start somewhere, enjoy what you got or plan on getting, cause once you start it’s never done, it always goes on hold. If you plan on buying a WRX know what you're getting into, every day there is a money pit which they're not wrong, but know what your plans on with the car.

What makes my car unique is me, I built the car the way I wanted it knowing other people's opinions will be negative but the best part is the ones that love the car. Having it spam themed with the colour wrap makes the car stand out from others.

Club Shoutouts.

@TeamStayHumble

The car scene brought new friends that I can call family in my life. I’m able to enjoy my car every time I look at it and say to myself, “I did it” with a smile on my face every time I walk away. Seeing builds from friends' cars go from stock to show ready is a crazy time, who knew I would enjoy seeing it?

Dream Car

My dream car is a Nissan GTR R34. Ever since seeing it in 2 fast 2 furious as Paul walker is racing it for on like 10min in the movie got me wanting one. Who knew the R34 would be everyone’s dream car even mine?
