Building the Unexpected: 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan Edition
Walk through any automotive event and you'll notice a pattern.
Rows of Subaru WRXs. Mustangs. Supras. BMWs. Civics. Corvettes.
They're incredible machines but every now and then a vehicle stops you simply because you weren't expecting to see it there.
That perfectly describes Devin Walsh's 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan build.
Finished in crisp Pure White, sitting low over massive 22-inch Rotiform wheels and packed with thoughtful modifications from bumper to bumper, Devin's Tiguan proves you don't need a sports car to build something that commands attention (https://www.volkswagen.com).
Sometimes the best builds start by ignoring what everyone else is doing.
A Lifetime of Automotive DNA
Growing up in Northern California Devin's love for cars was never something he had to search for. It was simply part of everyday life.
His father had always been passionate about building cars. Before Devin was born he was deeply involved in hot rods, eventually transitioning into Saabs while continuing to spend weekends attending automotive events.
Those weekends became family traditions.
Around 12 years old another style captured Devin's attention: lowriders. His father began taking him throughout the Bay Area to experience that culture firsthand. By high school the import scene opened up. Hot Import Nights introduced him to Japanese and European builds.
Devin credits it all to one person: his dad.
"My passion has been there my entire life but it all came from my father's love for cars and what he passed down to me."
From BMW Wagon to 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan Build
Before the Tiguan Devin spent over a decade building a 2008 BMW E91 wagon. At the time modified wagons were still relatively uncommon making the car stand out wherever it went.
Eventually it was time for something different. He wanted the practicality of a wagon but with more room, modern technology, and value without a luxury price tag.
His search narrowed to two vehicles: a Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line or an Audi Q5.
Although the Audi was tempting Devin couldn't ignore VW's styling, value, and familiar roots.
"I instantly fell in love with the body lines of the Tiguan especially with the R-Line package."
Then fate stepped in. When his BMW was unexpectedly totaled the search became urgent. Only days later he found a showroom-condition 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan SEL R-Line with just 15,000 miles.
The timing couldn't have been better. The 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan build officially began.
The Plan That Spiraled Into Greatness
Interestingly Devin never intended for the Tiguan to become a show vehicle. Originally he simply wanted a comfortable daily driver with personality.
The first plan was simple: install coilovers, lower it, call it done.
Unfortunately none of the available suspension options achieved the stance he envisioned. At the same time he wasn't willing to sacrifice drivability by running an extremely low static setup.
The answer became obvious: Airlift Performance.
Once the suspension installed everything snowballed. Performance modifications. Carbon fiber. Lighting. Custom fabrication. Exterior styling. One project quickly became another until the Tiguan slowly evolved into something far beyond what he'd originally imagined.
The turning point came after meeting Josh at Creative Customs in Vallejo. After seeing the vehicle Josh encouraged Devin to start entering local car shows.
Up until that point Devin had never entered a single one of his previous builds. Now he was experiencing automotive culture from an entirely different perspective.
"The recognition has been incredible but this has always been a passion build."
Clean Over Loud: The Design Philosophy
If there's one thing that defines Devin's style it's restraint.
His goal was never to create something flashy. Instead every modification serves a purpose. The paint remains clean and elegant. The white-on-black color combination feels executive rather than excessive. The painted SkiGuard roof box complements the body perfectly.
The massive Rotiform GRZ wheels completely transform the SUV's proportions.
"They say wheels make the car. I think these definitely made this one."
Rather than screaming for attention the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan build quietly earns it. At local events he's often the only modified SUV in attendance. That uniqueness naturally starts conversations.
"It gets a lot of thumbs-up on the freeway and people constantly come over at gas stations or shows asking questions."
Engineering Meets Creativity: The Custom Trunk Display
One of the most impressive aspects of the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan build isn't immediately visible.
Lift the rear hatch and you'll discover a completely custom air suspension display designed entirely by Devin himself.
Knowing that all the Airlift management equipment would be housed beneath the cargo floor he wanted something removable that would showcase the installation during events while remaining practical for everyday life.
Using 3D modeling software Devin designed the entire removable trunk lid before having his friend Elon machine the MDF panels. Custom acrylic pieces by Gil at Gilly's Garage completed the display.
The centerpiece? A Volkswagen infinity mirror surrounded by LED lighting that reflects across the polished air management components underneath.
Building it wasn't easy.
"I think I went through just about every LED strip on the market trying to get the exact look I wanted."
The finished result looks like it came directly from a factory concept vehicle.

Built in the Garage: A Collaborative Effort
Like many of the best builds this Tiguan wasn't assembled by writing checks.
Most of the work was completed by Devin himself. The air management, trunk display, lighting, and countless other details were all designed and installed in his own garage.
Several talented friends helped bring the final vision together:
- Air Ride Equipment installed the suspension and air lines
- Josh at Creative Customs modified the front strut towers for improved camber adjustment
- Gil at Gilly's Garage created the custom acrylic panels
- Francisco at Autobody Express handled the painted exterior components
- SkiGuard USA color-matched the roof box before delivery
Each contribution helped elevate an already unique project.
Future Plans: Never Finished
Like every enthusiast Devin knows the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan build isn't finished.
Plans include custom upholstery, a big brake kit, a future widebody conversion, and eventually teaching himself to fabricate custom carbon-fiber interior components.
Because sometimes creating something unique means making parts that don't already exist.
Community: The Unexpected Payoff
Although entering the show scene was never part of the original plan it's become one of Devin's favorite parts of ownership.
Gifted Lifestyles welcomed him almost immediately and today he proudly represents one of Northern California's strongest teams.
"The VW community around here may be small but everyone has been incredibly supportive."
That support has pushed him to continually raise the standard for every new modification.
Final Thoughts: From Dream to Reality
Like many enthusiasts, Devin's dream garage continues to evolve. If given the opportunity, he'd love to own either an Audi RS6 Avant or the BMW M3 Touring.
Until then, he'll continue refining one of the cleanest modified Volkswagen Tiguan s you'll find anywhere.
Because this 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan build has never been about trophies. It's never been about recognition.
It's about taking an idea and bringing it to life.
"At the end of the day, it all comes down to turning our dreams into a reality."
The 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan build proves that passion and creativity aren't limited to traditional performance cars. Sometimes the best builds come from asking "what if" and refusing to follow the crowd.
