Introduction: Meet Waseem Parker
My name is Waseem Parker, and I’m 23 years old, specializing in information security. I grew up in a family of racers; my four uncles on my mother's side have been racing all their lives, from the eldest to the youngest. I spent my weekends at the track with them, watching The Fast and the Furious over and over until we memorized all the lines. I still remember visiting their house every Sunday, where there were two NOS bottles—one gold and one silver—that were taller than me. Haha!
My family owns a motor spares business, and all our cars were built in the backyard by us. We helped and taught each other as we grew up, “passing down the wrench,” so to speak. I worked some weekends during high school, then studied for my degree online while working full-time to purchase my dream car: the Toyota 86.
The Journey to Owning a Toyota 86
I own a 2JZ Rocket Bunny V1 Toyota 86. The reason I bought the Toyota is quite special. I met someone named Paul while playing Call of Duty online. We became best friends for ten years and spent every New Year’s Eve together. In every Need for Speed game we played, we built a Rocket Bunny 86 and dreamed of doing a 2JZ swap.
We even built and drifted Rocket Bunny 86 and Supra RC cars. I planned to buy a manual transmission, while Paul was going to get an automatic due to losing a leg in an accident. Tragically, Paul passed away from cancer in 2020. I cherished my Toyota then, and I cherish it even more now that I have the 2JZ Rocket Bunny 86. “I just wish he were here to see it. Rest in peace, Paul.”
What Makes My Toyota 86 Unique
What makes my Toyota 86 stand out from others is not just the bright yellow color or the powerful 2JZ engine. There were only 1,500 yellow 86s made, and they were released in America. I might have the only one in South Africa—or even in the whole of Africa. The same applies to my Buddy Club V1 tail lights, which were discontinued and had to be imported from Australia, making them the only set in South Africa.
I opted for a smooth look instead of the riveted style with the body kit, which I believe looks a lot cleaner. Not many people go for that aesthetic. The Rocket Bunny kit has been mixed with the TRD kit, creating a unique mashup between the two.

My Hands-On Approach to Building the 86
Aside from the 2JZ engine and widebody kit, I’ve done the fitment and custom work myself. This includes fitting coilovers, lights, lips, gauges, customizing interior lighting, and modifying the cluster. I also handle the maintenance and repair work myself, with the help of family and friends.

The Car Community: Friends and Support
The car scene has brought me many friendships and introduced me to some incredibly helpful individuals. There are amazing people and clubs in the car community that are supportive and friendly. The 86 group in Cape Town is definitely one of them, along with many others.
While the car scene has its share of negativity and hate, I can’t understand or relate to that. To me, cars are a way of expressing yourself and your passion. It’s an art form, whether it’s about power, aesthetics, or stance.
To quote me, “We all share the same love for cars, so let’s lift each other up. Not everyone has the means to do a 1,000hp build or even a 200hp build. As long as the spirit, passion, and love for cars are there, that’s all we need in the community.”
Living the Dream: My Toyota 86
I’m currently in my dream car. I never pictured it being yellow, but yellow sort of chose me, and I’ve grown to love it.
