A Lifelong Passion for JDM Cars
I'm Steven Weatherby, known on Instagram as @nos034, and I've always had a deep passion for cars, especially Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) vehicles. Growing up, I dreamed of building something Australian and tough, much like my dad's old-school muscle cars. However, witnessing the capabilities of Skylines at roll racing events shifted my aspirations toward owning one.
Influenced by Family and Motorsport
My dad was the main influence behind my automotive interests. From a young age, he took me to car shows, track days, and drag races. He built an old-school muscle car, and I always wanted to create something even faster. The high-horsepower Skylines I saw at roll racing events convinced me that a turbocharged import could outperform traditional V8s.
Acquiring the Dream Car
Determined to own a Skyline, I began buying and selling cars to fund my dream. Eventually, I found a 2000 Nissan R34 GTT Skyline for sale, 12 hours away. Despite the distance, I knew I had to have it. The car was originally silver, automatic, and in need of work, but I saw its potential immediately.
Transforming the Skyline into a Unique Build
Inspired by the blue R34 from Fast and Furious, I aimed to create a unique version that reflected my personal style. The transformation involved extensive modifications:
-
Exterior: Resprayed in the iconic Bayside Blue, fitted with a V-Spec 2 inspired body kit, including a Type R (East Bear) front bumper, side skirts, rear bumper, high-rise GTR spoiler, and 19-inch Work ZR10 wheels wrapped in Michelin PS5 tires. Custom taillights and BC Racing coilovers completed the stance.
-
Interior: Equipped with an LZMFG steering wheel, aftermarket triple gauges, custom door panels, Alpine head unit, full Kicker sound system, various Nismo accessories, and blue LEDs in the dashboard to evoke the Fast and Furious ambiance. And yes, there's NOS installed.
-
Performance: Converted to a manual transmission with a Nismo competition clutch, managed by a Haltech 2500 ECU. A 3582 turbo sits on a custom twin-scroll manifold, complemented by a full 3.5-inch turbo-back exhaust with a screamer pipe, upgraded coil packs, dual fuel pumps, 1000cc injectors, flex-fuel sensor, and rolling anti-lag.
Performance Achievements
On the dyno, the Skyline produced impressive numbers:
-
98 Octane Pump Fuel: 466hp (348kW) at 20psi
-
E85 Race Fuel: 573hp (427kW) at 24psi
The Driving Experience
Driving the Skyline is akin to being in a go-kart or on a roller coaster. It handles smoothly, and when the power kicks in, it pushes you back into the seat, delivering an exhilarating experience. Owning a Skyline has been a pleasure, and I highly recommend that enthusiasts drive one at least once in their lives.
Future Plans and Aspirations
Looking ahead, I plan to race the Skyline around Bathurst, participate in drag races to see its quarter-mile times, and embark on long road trips across Australia. I've already completed a journey from Sydney to Melbourne and aim to travel to Queensland and Tasmania in the coming year.
