Brandon Flood's Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4: An Audiobook
A Lifelong Car Enthusiast
I've been a car enthusiast since I was 15. I’ve always liked various types of cars but was particularly drawn to Mitsubishis, especially during their WRC rivalry with Subaru. I've built a few cars over the years, and I always take my time to construct each vehicle to serve its intended purpose. Currently, I work as a diesel technician with a CDL Class A and a state inspection license. After three years at Wyotech, I graduated from their Blairsville, PA campus in 2019.
In addition to working on cars, I love playing classic PS2 games like Need for Speed Underground (1 and 2), Gran Turismo, and Tokyo Extreme Racing Zero. You can often find me at drag strips, car shows, and track days, either driving my own car or watching from the stands. No matter what, it’s always a great time.
My First Car and Early Inspirations
Growing up, I often went to the shop with my dad, where he worked on cars. Watching him was fascinating, and it slowly got me into the car scene. When I was old enough, I was given a worn-down 1993 Eagle Talon DL 1.8L automatic. That car needed a lot of work, but I loved it, especially after getting it running. It was around that time that the Fast and Furious series premiered, and I fell in love with the iconic lime green Mitsubishi Eclipse from the first movie.

Then came the movie Thunderbolt with Jackie Chan. After seeing that, I became a die-hard Mitsubishi fan. The 3000GT VR4 was at the top of my dream car list because it had everything I wanted: a coupe design, great looks, an incredible sound, and tons of potential for motorsport modifications.
Building My 1992 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4
Over the years, I’ve focused on refining and lightening my 3000GT VR4 to make it more performance-oriented. Mitsubishi’s biggest setback for this model, in my opinion, was its weight, so I swapped out heavier components for lighter alternatives, including wheels, exhaust and intercooler plumbing, seats, and radiator. I only replaced parts as they wore out or broke, prioritizing maintenance and performance testing every step of the way. My goal was always to bring out the car's full potential without straying from its original identity.
One of my personal touches is the 004R decal on the right side of the front splitter and the left side of the spoiler. The "004R" stands for "The 4th Ralliart Project" I completed successfully. Ralliart, once Mitsubishi's competitive edge in motorsport, inspired me to carry forward that legacy of performance in all my builds. Every time I drive my 3000GT VR4, it brings a smile to my face; the acceleration, handling, and low-profile stance make it a joy to drive. After parking, I always look back, thinking, "What a wonderful car."
Detailed Build List
The engine, a 6G72TT, remains stock internally but has plenty of supporting modifications:
-
Suspension: Tein-Z Flex coilovers with solid motor mounts
-
Fuel System: AEM Stealth fuel pump, 3SX fuel pump assembly, Fuel Lab fuel pressure regulator, and Juster Chrome engine management
-
Turbo Setup: Kinugawa Anti-Surge TDO4HL-20Ts and custom oversized twin aluminum intercoolers
-
Brakes: EBC pads in the rear and Hawk pads up front
-
Wheels: Enkei TS-5
-
Exhaust: OBX Racing
-
Transmission: Modified by TPG, with a 300M output shaft and billet input shaft seal
Over the years, I’ve put in countless hours to create a car that matches my vision, but it’s hard to remember every single mod I’ve made.
Who Did the Work?
I performed most of the work myself, except for some transmission upgrades done by TPG Performance and a few customizations on the taillights. Robert from OOHNOO Performance provided my intercooler kit, which I then installed.
Future Plans for the 3000GT VR4
The 3000GT VR4 will continue to evolve. Upcoming upgrades include a carbon fiber hood, aluminum driveshaft, dual fuel pump setup, and 1000cc FIC injectors. When the engine eventually reaches its limit, I plan to reinforce it and install a dual ball-bearing Evo 3 big 16G turbo setup. In truth, no project car is ever "finished."
Shout Outs and Thanks
Special thanks to DSM Tuners, 3SX Performance, TPG Performance, STM Performance, OOHNOO Performance, Abe, and Wayne Hunter. These groups and individuals have provided invaluable support and parts for my 3000GT VR4.
Dream Cars
If I could choose any dream car, it would be either the Castrol TOM’s Supra, the 3000GT race car from the movie Thunderbolt, or John Shepherd’s old-school 1G
