"Build your car for yourself, not what others think it should be." – Michael Lightfoot

The Beginning: From Ohio Roots to the Open Road

Michael Lightfoot grew up in Zanesville, Ohio, where cars were more than transportation—they were a way of life. His father worked on the family vehicles in their driveway, often teaching through action rather than words. "My dad always made sure we had a working car," Michael recalls. "Watching him and seeing what went into keeping a car alive gave me respect for the process."

Now living in Columbus, Ohio, for over 20 years, Michael, age 51, spends his days inspecting and building furniture for Pottery Barn/William Sonoma's warehouse. But once the work boots come off, the garage lights flicker on, and that's where the real story begins.

Like many enthusiasts, Michael's early passion was fueled by pop culture and late-night inspiration. "Watching Pimp My Ride growing up was huge," he laughs. "That creativity—seeing what they could transform from something ordinary into something insane—stuck with me."

The competitive fire from his sports days never faded. It simply found a new outlet. "That drive to compete shifted from the court to the car. I wanted to see what I could build, how far I could take it."

The Charger That Changed Everything

Michael's path to his 2015 Dodge Charger Scat Pack wasn't planned—it was a series of trial runs and learning experiences. His garage history includes a Ford Tempo, Chevy Cavalier, Hyundai Tucson, and a Dodge Charger R/T Plus.

But the day he got behind the wheel of the Scat Pack, everything clicked. "It was blue—my favorite color—and had all the speed I needed," he says with a grin. "That was it. I was hooked."

What began as a daily driver slowly evolved into a full-on showpiece. The spark came at a Jax Wax car show in 2016, when he rolled up in his Scat Pack for fun. By the end of that weekend, the idea of "just a stock car" was gone forever. "That show changed everything. I saw what others were doing, and I wanted to see how far I could go with mine."

The Build: Turning Vision Into Reality

Michael's Charger—nicknamed "Night King"—is now a full-blown head-turner. The build blends bold style, precise detailing, and an unmistakable presence.

When he discusses it, his pride is evident. "Driving it feels unreal. Every time I look at it or see people's reactions—it's like, wow."

The Charger's custom widebody wrap, featuring a massive full-size dragon design, is its crown jewel. The theme commands attention from every angle, symbolizing power and transformation. "People can't believe I actually drive it. They always think it's a trailer queen. But nah—it hits the road."

Building for Passion and Recognition

When asked whether his build is for passion or recognition, Michael doesn't hesitate. "Both," he admits. "The passion comes from wanting to be the best I can. The recognition? That's for everyone who's helped me along the way. When people see the car, they see all of us who made it happen."

He believes in building for yourself first. "If you build to impress others, you'll always chase opinions. When you build for yourself, it's freedom. Every mod, every detail—it represents me."

The Road to SEMA 2025

Michael's SEMA story is a testament to second chances and perseverance.

"Racewars 742 was looking for builds in April," he recalls. "Last year, I dropped the ball and missed the opportunity. I wasn't letting that happen again."

Determined to level up, Michael and J&E Customz went all in—new Braum seats, upgraded audio, a redesigned center console, fresh trunk setup, and custom vertical doors. Every aspect of the build was meticulously touched, refined, and rebuilt to meet SEMA standards.

"It was long nights, no sleep, just grinding. But when you walk into SEMA and see your car under the lights with the biggest names in the world—it's a feeling you can't describe. That's when all the hard work makes sense."

Sponsors and Support

Michael gives full credit to the brands and partners who made this year's build possible:

  • Braum Racing
  • Antigravity Batteries
  • NOS Nitrous Systems
  • R1 Concepts
  • J&E Customz
  • Vertical Doors Inc.
  • Tunergoods

Each sponsor played a role in transforming the Scat Pack into a one-of-a-kind showcase vehicle ready for SEMA's international stage.

Car Community and Club Culture

Michael proudly reps both C3 Car Club and ElitClique Car Club, two organizations that emphasize community over competition.

"They stand for family and support," he says. "We look out for each other. The car scene gave me new friends, people I can call anytime for advice or help. It's more than cars—it's belonging."

That sense of community drives him as much as horsepower does. "This scene teaches you patience, humility, and pride. You meet people from every walk of life who share the same love. It's therapy."

Future Plans and Upgrades

Michael's journey is far from over. The plan? Go even bigger.

"Next year, I'm aiming for the New York Auto Show," he says confidently. "And if the opportunity comes up, I'll be back at SEMA. Bigger, louder, cleaner."

He's also planning the next major upgrade: a supercharger install to bring more bite to the dragon.

Final Thoughts from a SEMA Builder

"Build your car for yourself. That's the secret. Make it your own and enjoy the ride."

Michael's Charger is more than a car—it's a reflection of discipline, self-expression, and the drive to stand out.

From warehouse floors to SEMA lights, Michael Lightfoot proves that passion and perseverance can turn a dream into a dragon on wheels.

r0cean11 Photography began as a simple hobby for me—something I explored out of pure curiosity and passion. Twenty-four years later, it has grown into one of the defining parts of my life. Before stepping fully into automotive photography, I spent years building cars for SEMA. I photographed my own builds and projects long before I ever considered taking the craft seriously. That all changed when my last build was totaled; from that moment, photography became more than an interest—it became my purpose. ----------- Today, I shoot and write for Stance Auto Magazine, PASMAG, 742 Marketing Events, Super Lap Battle, Global Time Attack, RACEWORZ, and a wide range of automotive events across the United States. ----------- To me, automotive photography is more than capturing a vehicle—it’s about telling the story that lives within it. Every builder leaves a piece of themselves in their car, and my job is to honor that by showcasing their vision through my lens. ----------- You’ll find my event coverage, feature shoots, and automotive storytelling across all my platforms. I’m always open to connecting, answering questions, and collaborating with builders, enthusiasts, and fellow creatives. ----------- I am also a Partner with Stance Auto Magazine, serving as the Director of Marketing and Media. ----------- Facebook (Personal): Donald Rochin (Donnie Roc)
