The Journey of Building RWB Rashomon
A Passion Born from Influences
Every car enthusiast has a spark—something or someone that ignites their lifelong passion for automobiles. For Sid Cheung, that inspiration came from his father, the legendary Jeremy Clarkson, and the iconic Akira Nakai of RWB (Rauh-Welt Begriff). Sid’s journey with cars, particularly Porsches, has been profoundly influenced by these figures, culminating in the creation of his masterpiece: RWB Rashomon.
Collaborating with Nakai San
As a personal historian and collaborator with Nakai San for over eight years, Sid has played a pivotal role in the RWB community. Assisting with interviews, naming cars, and facilitating builds for friends, Sid has traveled the world with Nakai San, contributing to around 35-40 builds. His deep connection with the RWB ethos shines through in his own cars, including his 1988 Targa (Hachioji) and his latest creation, a 2006 Porsche C4S built during SEMA 2024.
The Inspiration Behind RWB Rashomon
RWB Rashomon is more than just a car; it’s a tribute to Sid’s mother. For 15 years, she drove the car in its stock form, embodying resilience and dedication. Nakai San’s design honors her legacy, ensuring the car remains drivable for her while encapsulating her youthful spirit. The name "Rashomon," chosen by Nakai San, reflects Sid’s role as a historian. It symbolizes the idea of seeing multiple perspectives—a nod to both the psychological phenomenon and Nakai San’s childhood fascination with model cars bearing the same name.
The Build: Trusting in Omakase
In true RWB fashion, the exterior, suspension tuning, and paintwork were all completed under the principle of "Omakase," meaning “I will leave it up to you” in Japanese. Nakai San was given full artistic freedom to craft the car, reminiscent of the early 2000s builds at RWB’s headquarters in Japan. Customers would drop off their cars, trusting Nakai San to surprise them with his visionary artistry.

The Master Craftsmen Behind RWB Rashomon
The build was executed by Akira Nakai and his assistant Yuki, with meticulous paintwork led by Mitsuaki Shinohara. Every element reflects the unmatched craftsmanship and dedication synonymous with RWB builds.
Living the Dream
Sid’s vision for RWB Rashomon is simple: to drive and enjoy the car. Unlike his other RWB build, Hachioji, which is stripped-down and hardcore, Rashomon offers a more livable experience with its modern comforts and drivability.
Racing History
Sid’s passion for RWB extends beyond building cars; he’s also raced in Idlers alongside Nakai San and other RWB members in 2017 and 2018. His connection to the community and the craft is deeply personal and multifaceted.
Future Plans
For now, Sid plans to savor every moment behind the wheel of Rashomon, a car that’s as much about family and memories as it is about performance and style.
